Is There a Cure for Vitiligo?

Vitiligo | Soul and Beauty MEDx | Mission Viejo, CA

Vitiligo is a skin condition that causes the skin to lose pigmentation in patches all over the body. It is more common than you might think, but many people with vitiligo take great pains to cover it up. Though vitiligo is not physically harmful, it can cause a person to feel highly self-conscious about their appearance.
So, is there a cure for vitiligo? The answer is no. There is no way to completely stop or reverse vitiligo. In fact, researchers still aren’t entirely sure what causes vitiligo. However, if you have vitiligo, there are treatments to help you cope with the condition. The simplest option is to use tanning solution and/or makeup to reintroduce surface pigment to the skin. Not everyone is satisfied with just covering up the condition, however. Your doctor may prescribe you topical creams, vitamin D, or medication that affects your immune system.
At MedX, we support the use of oral and topical medications, sometimes in combination with UVB therapy, depending on the nature of your vitiligo. UVB light can be used to bring back pigment to small patches of skin. For more extreme cases, skin grafts may be an option.
