  • March 14, 2022

Our facial muscles let us smile, frown, and raise our eyebrows to communicate our emotions to others. At the same time, though, these facial muscles pull on the skin, forming expression lines and wrinkles. You can relax these muscles and ease the tension on your skin with Botox®. This popular wrinkle relaxer will smooth expression lines away for a younger, more relaxed appearance.

What is Botox®?

FDA-approved Botox® relaxes lines and wrinkles caused by muscle activity. To make facial expressions, your facial muscles lift the skin, pulling it into wrinkles. Over time, these wrinkles become deeper. Botox® calms the activity of targeted facial muscles to let the skin relax and become smooth again.

Where Can Botox® Be Used?

Botox® has been approved for use on crow’s feet around the eyes, horizontal forehead creases, and lines between the eyebrows. It also has numerous medical benefits, including the treatment of hyperhidrosis (excess sweating) and muscle spasms. Botox® works equally well on men and women, and both can look significantly younger with treatment

You can have one area of your face treated with Botox® or several locations in one session. The exact amount depends on your individual needs and how dramatic you want your results to look.

How Does Botox® Work?

Botox® uses a neuromodulator called botulinum toxin A to relax lines and wrinkles. This molecule interacts with the nerve cells that tell facial muscles when to contract. It stops the nerve from sending signals to the muscle, so it stops moving and lets the overlying skin relax and become smooth.

Although you will often see Botox® referred to as a neurotoxin, it does not cause any harm to the nerve or muscle. Both will return to normal functioning as soon as your Botox® wears off. During the time the muscle stays inactive, the skin gets a break from the constant pulling and tugging. If you have regular Botox® treatments, you can even prevent these lines and wrinkles from getting worse. Some younger people choose it as a method for avoiding expression lines before they appear.

How Much Does Botox® Cost?

Your cost for Botox® will depend on which areas you want to be treated, how much Botox® you will need, and your provider’s pricing.
